Today, I’m sharing a fun writing craft that is perfect to use for book reviews/reports, Read Across America, or anytime of year when you want to get your little readers thinking about reading! The writing component is open-ended, so you can determine the type of prompt your students will respond to. I also know how valuable your time is, so this craft is super simple and requires very little prep on your end.

Winter Olympics Activities for Kindergarten and First Grade

January 11, 2018

How exciting is it that we’re just a month away from the Winter Games?! For some reason, I have strong memories associated with the Winter Olympics. My earliest memory of the  is from 1994 when I was in fifth grade and they were played in Lillehammer! I had a subscription to Sports Illustrated for Kids and read all about the athletes, kept a medal count, and I think we even had our own version of the games in our classroom. Then, during the Vancouver games in 2010, we were snowed in with my in-laws for two weeks while we redid our hardwood floors (because mid-winter is the *perfect* time to take on that project). During the last games in Sochi, we were still in the NICU with our Faify girl! Crazy how fast time flies!

Anyway, I just had to channel my excitement into a new learning resource. I couldn’t let this awesome opportunity to learn about this event without creating something for our little learners!

Are you looking for activities to help you teach all about the Winter Olympics to your kids? Then, you must check out this blog post! It's full of Winter Games FUN and perfect for kindergarten, first grade, and second grade students. In this unit, you will find crafts, a countdown, vocabulary activities, directed drawings, nonfiction text, a mini-reader, sports trading cards, and more! This will add to your Olympics studies and your kids will have so much fun teaching these ideas!

If you teach in kindergarten through third, then your students likely don’t even remember the last Winter Games because they were so little! And, while they may remember the most recent Summer Games, you’ll definitely have to build some background knowledge, regardless.

Here’s a nonfiction piece that’s perfect for doing just that. Plus, it has a follow-up comprehension check to complete afterward. You can grab both for FREE at the bottom of this post.

The Easter Bunny’s Assistant Book Companion

April 10, 2017

Omiword, I wish the lighting had been better in this pic!  He looked so stinkin’ cute! 028 Becks is reading my newfound favorite Easter book – The Easter Bunny’s Assistant by Jan Thomas.  You probably know her other darling work, Rhyming Dust Bunnies.  Love it, right?!

>> Purchase on Amazon <<

So, anyway, The Easter Bunny’s Assisstant was recommended by a parent.  She’s a buyer for our local library and is coming to read this book to us on Friday morning.  We’re on Spring Break next week, so we’re having to cram a whole week’s worth of Easter stuff into ONE day!  Friday is going to be bizzzzzzzzzzzy.  If you haven’t discovered this book yet, it’s a hilarious read about The Easter Bunny and his assistant, Skunk, who gets really excited about dying eggs and then…well…does what skunks apparently do when they get excited.  A skart, maybe?  With a little boy (and a classroom full of kiddos) who are completely intrigued by bodily functions, this book is guaranteed to get the giggles going! { I bought my copy at our local bookstore for less than $12 for a hardback copy, and I promise your kiddos will quickly add it to their list of favs!}  Knowing that this parent was coming to read this story to my class, I made lots of fun activities to go with it and compiled it all into a mini-unit I have for sale on TpT right now…

I think before the parent arrives, we’re going to make these little sentence strip caps – featured below on Becks…
