If you have students struggling with number sense, this comprehensive math intervention curriculum can be a great addition to your RTI or small group time!
This resource can be used in so many different ways. It was initially designed with kindergarten RTI in mind, specifically to meet the needs of students struggling with number sense. Additionally, it could be used to support your numeracy instruction in pre-k, kindergarten, first grade, within a small group, for ESL/ELL students, or for remediation in second grade.
An initial screening should help you identify the students that would best fit in an RTI group that focuses on number sense (i.e. Brigance, AIMS Web, MAP, etc.). They are typically students who are not able to master the standard during core instruction.
Ideally, your groups should be no more than five students of similar skill. This helps you focus on specific needs, and not feel overwhelmed by varying levels.
Each session should last 20-30 minutes and provide intensive instruction in number sense. The activities in this pack will HELP you do this, but I also encourage you to incorporate any other number sense strategies, games, songs, etc. that you find effective, too. The goal, of course, is to get HELP THE KIDDOS LEARN!
Because your students are sitting in close proximity to you during this time, it is easy to provide different activity mats for different students and not feel overwhelmed.
Since the activities are the same for each number, students will become familiar with the routine and recognize what they are to do on each mat as your sessions progress. Eventually, you could even create a math center using the mats!
The mats can be used flexibly. For instance, this mat could be used to practice identifying the number word at the top of the page with colored chips as shown, OR it could be a fluency page where students read the number words aloud.
The mats can easily be hole-punched and stored in a binder and then slid into a page protector or dry-erase pocket (as shown in the images) during instruction…
…or you can give students copies of the work mats to work directly on top of as practice, review, or assessment.
Kids and teachers LOVE these Highlight-a-Number mats because what’s more fun than a highlighter, of course?!
This page (which comes as a full-sheet or half-sheet option), is a great wrap up at the end of your instruction to see how your kiddos are doing.

The center struggle is REAL, y’all. Kids ADORE them, and – don’t get me wrong – I love a good, solid center, too. But, sometimes the prep gets a little…hmmm…tedious? Or, maybe it’s 5:55am and you or your little one comes down with something dreadful and you’re like Ah! I need something QUICK for my sub! Or maybe you just love a good clipboard like I do 😉
This was the idea behind Clipboard Classroom Activities. Literally, you print the page and add a clipboard! That’s it! There’s no cutting or pasting or gathering of supplies on the teacher-end. The whole idea is to use what you already have in the classroom – books, word walls, spelling lists, listening center, environmental print, magazines, etc. – add the printable to a clipboard and let your kiddos do the work.
Each activity supports literacy and promises to engage and challenge your kiddos!

Admission: math wasn’t always one of my favorite things. I kind of hated numbers. I struggled big time throughout my school-age years trying to understand numbers and how they worked. I finished off pre-cal my junior year and said buh-bye and good riddance to equations and PEMDAS and my trusty TI-83.
Then, I decided to teach elementary school. I had this WHAT AM I GOING TO DO IF I HAVE TO TEACH FIFTH GRADE MATH?! moment and decided I should brush up on my skills as much as I could before I was flustered in front of a bunch of ten-year-olds who could school me fractions. So, I decided to minor in math. I had two amazing professors who wanted to make sure I ‘got it,’ and it was only then that I decided to repair my relationship with algebra, geometry, and the like. You’ll never find me acing a calculus test, but I’d like to think I’d stand a pretty good chance to those fifth graders now.
One of the main reasons I struggled with math as a child was because I didn’t have a strong number sense. I didn’t understand numbers or what to do with them. I’m not kidding when I say that strategies like making a ten or using friendly numbers didn’t click with me until I was twenty-two-years-old!
Fortunate for our students now, number development has become the top priority in math instruction. Subitizing, making a ten, counting on and back, comparing numbers, decomposing numbers, and using number bonds are the norm. Long before we provide students with algorithms, we are making sure they ‘get’ numbers! Brilliant! My seven-year-old self is giving all the heart eyes.
One of the best ways to develop number sense in little learners is through games during math rotations or centers. When I consider my kiddos, I need something that is skill-specific, simple for independent or partner play, and – most importantly – ENGAGING! And, it’s a major bonus if it requires little prep because I do NOT have the time to be laminating and cutting my life away. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
